This story, “Heroes Return”, is an effective piece of literature. This story has many literary qualities. One of the literary qualities in this story is that it has suspense and foreshadowing. An example of this story’s suspense and foreshadowing is when Jody is riding around in King’s car. King tells Jody that he wanted him to come for a ride. He asked Jody if he wanted to be his right hand man. He wanted Jody to deal drugs to his friends, Junior sees his little brother getting out of the hustlers car and knows that the two were up to no good. The readers were stuck wondering what the boy’s big brother’s response to seeing his brother with the thug would be. Another one of the qualities that makes this story a piece of good literature is that this story has a good moral, learn from others mistakes. Until recent events Jody thought going to jail was cool. He thought that going to jail would get you better in the streets, more connected. On the day his brother returned home he said, “Who’d you meet in there? Any of the big cats?” He also said, “Yeah, I bet you got connections now. I bet you ready for the big time.”His brother found out that Jody was going to sell drugs and Junior treated his little brother like he was in jail. He would only eat bread and water, sleep on only a spring mattress, and receive random beatings. Over all, “Heroes Return”, was a good piece of literature.
I believe Kristin Lattany, the author of “Hero’s Return”, was vey successful in creating a good piece of literature. This short story is an example of good literature because it has relatable characters. For example, Jody and Junior can easily be related to because they don’t have a father. Some people may be able to relate to these characters because they might be in the same situation and could enjoy reading a book that they can relate to. Another reason Jody and Junior are relatable characters is because they get themselves into trouble. Most kids can relate to being in a situation like that because we tend to get in trouble a lot. These examples show how this story is good literature because it has relatable characters.
Another reason “Hero’s Return” is a good example of literature is because it has good figurative language. For example on page 34 the author writes, “And then the King pulled that big old wad out of his pocket and plucked off a crisp new five and handed it to me”. This quote is good figurative language because it helps the reader get a picture of the five dollar bill because the author describes it well. Another example of figurative language from this story is on page 34 the author writes, “King grinned, the wrinkles in his handsome face sank in and made it look like a skull”. I think this is figurative language because it is descriptive and gave me a really good picture of what the King’s face looked like. These examples show that “Hero’s Return” is good literature because it has a lot of figurative language.
In conclusion, I think the story “Hero’s Return” is good literature because it has relatable characters and a lot of figurative language.
This story is an effective piece of literature because when I was reading the story I found a lot of similes and great details. Some similes are “I seen him take a roll of money thick as my fist out of his pocket plenty of times.” (33) Or “the window slid down as easy as greased silk. (33) With the author writing more and more similes, it’s easy to understand what is actually happening. Also, in the dialogue I noticed that the grammar isn’t correct. For example on page 33 where Judy states "I don’t think about ice cream much no more cause I don’t like to go in Kravitz’s store since it happened.” This shows the type of background Judy and his brother came from. Judging by the story Judy and his brother seem to be poorly educated based on the dialogue. Another great thing about the story is the details. As I was reading along I noticed the description “his wavy hair shining and diamonds flashing on his hands.” It was easy to visualize the description of the character as well as the setting of the story. Overall, this was a great story; it told us a lot about the characters just by reading the dialogue and the author using great details. This short story wasn’t bad at all and I would definitely recommend it to a friend.
The author was very successful in writing a good piece of literature in the story, “Heroes Return.” She was successful for a couple of reasons. One reason was that she used very relatable characters. The characters were very relatable because it sounds just like people that are heard about on the news. When Junior went to jail this made it very relatable because there are always people going to jail. Also when Jodi had the drugs this was typical because many kids get their hands on drugs nowadays. Another way this was a good piece of literature was because it taught a good lesson. The lesson was that jail is bad and can change someone. This was shown when Junior was sent to jail. In the beginning before he went to jail he was a criminal and a drug addict. After he was released from jail he became a responsible older brother and somewhat of a father figure for Jodi. This really proves how jail can change someone. All in all this story was a very good piece of literature.
The author Kristin Hunter Lattany was really successful at making a good piece of literature!
When the story starts, the author wrote “I tell you, I was about to explode, I was so excited when I heard my big brother Junior was coming home.” This sentence made us think of these questions like, where did junior go? Why was the main character so happy that he was back? What did Junior do to result in him going away? The author use of the skill ‘Interesting Plot’ made this sentence more attention grabbing and interesting.
The author also included a good lesson in this story. When Jody was in King’s car, King wanted him to sell some drugs to others, and was bribed by a five dollar bill. When his brother, who just came back from jail, found out about this, he sent Jody to ‘jail’ and left him in it for 4 days, what this story is basically telling us is that, don’t let others make the decisions for you, make it yourself, do what you think is right.
Also, the author uses an interesting conflict between the brothers in the story. Junior, the older brother, found out about the drug selling thing that Jody was doing and locked him up in his room for 4 days, in this four days, they had fights, and agreements. The conflict between the two characters is interesting because it is a conflict in which one of the character changes from bad to good.
Overall, Kristin was successful in creating a good piece of literature.
The author of this story was very good at creating a good piece of literature. She used many different qualities of good literature. One way the author created a good story was that she used a good conflict. The conflict in the story was that the mother wanted her daughter to be good at something. In the text she says,” of course you can be a prodigy, too.(24)” in the beginning of the story she wanted her to be like Shirley temple. They tried to make her hair the same way and dreamed for her to be just like that and be famous. When that idea did not work her mother became desperate for something. She started testing her to see if she had any hidden talents. In the story it says,” she would present new tests, taking her examples from stories of amazing children she had read in Ripley’s believe it or not, or good housekeeping, readers digest and dozens of other magazines.” Many people can relate to this because peoples parents may want the best for them or for the kids to be special in some way. The author used figurative language as well.” she had this peculiar smell like a baby that had done something in its pants. And her fingers felt like a dead persons, like an old peach I once found in the back of the refrigerator; the skin just slid off the meat when I picked it up.”
The short story “Hero’s Return” is a good piece of literature. The author uses an environment that is easy to connect with today’s world. One thing to connect with our lives is kids that smoke in the Amity district. In the book Jody smokes cigarettes and weed illegally, which is same with kids in our school. Another connection to the story could be where they live. They could live in a town like New Haven or Bridgeport. Another piece of good literature is imagery. This is shown in this quote, “And then the King pulled that big old wad out of his pocket and plucked off a crisp new five and handed it to me.” Another quote of imagery is, “Nobody got hurt, but Mrs.Kravitz hollered like somebody had killed her.” I also see a little irony in the story. When Junior comes out of jail you would think he will continue to be bad, but the jail changed him and turned him in to a wiser person. Also the events in the book make this good literature, because they are always so extreme or different. That is why “Hero’s Return” is a good piece of literature.
The author, Kristin Lattany, of "Hero's Return'' was successfull in creating a good piece of literature. The story started off with details that made me keep on reading. For example, on the first page, page 32, the author wrote. ''I tell you, I was about to explode, I was so excited when I heard my big brother Junior was coming home.'' That beginning of the short story made me get questions in my head, like, where was his brother returning from? The author also made this a good piece of literature by giving very descriptive deatails. For example, on page 34 paragraph 12 it says,'' The wrinkles in his handsome face sank in and made it look like a skull.'' I got that picture in my head clearly. Another descriptive quote from the story is on page 36 paragraph 4 which says, '' I tembeled, casuse I knew what was coming. He had the belt in his hnd, folded over double. My face was stinging from the whack, and I was beginning to cry...'' Another reason this is good literature is because many people can connect to Jody, by having an older brother go to jail for a while, having only one parent around, and living in a tough community, or Junior, who has gone to jail. Some people tend to read books that they can connect to or conect their lives to. Those are just a few reasons and examples of how ''Hero's Return'' by Kristin Lattany was a good piece of literature.
The author was very successful in creating a good piece of literature. This story contained many traits that made it so. It had a good lesson. For example, the older brother, who wanted Jody to become an honest person in the future without any criminal records, taught Jody a lesson to not become a criminal like he did. Because with a record, Jody won't have a fufilling future. "...Nobody's going to hire a jailbird" & "Saving him, that's what" (both pg 36).
This work also has believable and relatable characters. It has a naive one and a wiser, older one who makes sure that the naive one doesnt get in trouble by doing stupid things.
This also had figurative language. It had description words that helped me picture it in my mind. "The Cadillac was about half a block long..." (pg 33).
Not just that, but this story had an interesting conflict thatmade me wonder what would happen next. I would ask myself questions like "What would happen to Jody if he got caught with the drugs?" and "Is Jody really going to start selling drugs for this 'The King' guy?" which also creates somewhat of suspense which is another trait for good literature.
I can relate to this because my mom looks after me and makes sure don't get into trouble for the sake of my future, and sometimes I look after my friend. She's six months younger than I am, but I still see her as my little sister and I want the best for her (we've been friends for 14 years). I tell her to try hard in school and to stay away from bad influences. So I can relate to this from two different points.
All in all, I consider this story to be a good piece of literature.
The author did an outstanding job at creating a piece of literature. First, this story was very descriptive. For example in the story, it says, " the cadillac was about a half block long and a sharp fox in a blone wig was sitting beside King. He looked cool as an ice cube with shiny diamonds.(pg.36). The author did an excellent job describing the scene and King. This reminded me of when a very rich kid was in my block in a Cadillac and i've always someone who I wanted to be friends with. Another descriptive part was " It was hot enough to boil water on the sidewalk. This was easy to imagine because I can imagine that the sidewalk is burning hot and the author gave a very good description that reader can imagine in their head easily. Then, he invited me over to his house. But it's not as similar becuase he didn't offer me anything to do bad. Another thnig the author did very well with was the suspense. One example is, when Junior locks up the door, everyone is wondering what he will do to Jody and it turns out to be giving Jody a lesson by whipping him. He wanted to teach him a good lesson and not let him go on the path which he had went on. Also, he kept on asking, do you want to jail, well i'll show you what jail is like. Another example of suspense is, when King rolls up near Jody, you are getting excited about what will King do becuase he's known for bad things and it turns out to be asking Jody if he'll sell drugs. These two things kept me very into the story and want to keep reading on.The author did a great job with creating this story and here are two things that he did very well with.
The author was good in creating a good piece of literature. There are many reasons to support this. One reason is that they described what was happening very well. This is shown were Junior gets his belt off, and Jody instantly knows what it means. “I trembled, because I knew what was coming. He had the belt in his hand, folded over double.” Also, the author is good at showing a moral. I think that the moral in this story is do the right thing. The author is good at making Junior show this to Jody. “All right. You got a week to think about it.” “He wants to wants to jail… Let him live on bread and water and stay in solitary and get knocked around every time he opens his mouth.” Those quotes show that although Junior is teaching Jody a lesson the hard way, it is the best way for him to learn. That is why the author was good in creating a good piece of literature.
The author did a very good job at creating a good piece of literature. First off, this story was very well written. She had a very good plot line to this story witch kept me very interested. The author started off the story with, “ I tell you I was about to explode..,” which had me very hooked on what the main character was going to start talking about. When the character said the word “explode” I knew that action was probably coming next and that had me hooked. I can connect this to when I saw “James Bond” and he drove his car off a cliff to start the movie. Once I started to like the story the author kept me going by telling me about Jody’s older brother Junior, and how he had been to jail and is now coming back home. The author told us how all the kids on the block idolized Junior and how many people looked up to him. This made me wonder what Junior was going to be like when he got home and kept me reading. The author also uses good imagery when describing King the local gangster in town. She also uses a simile to give me an even better picture of the scene she is describing. One example of this is when king drives up to Jody the author says, “The Cadillac was about half a block long, and a sharp fox in a blond wig was sitting beside King. He looked cool as an ice cube in there, his wavy hair shining and diamonds flashing on his hands.” This really helps me kind of get to know what kind of character King is in this story. King later tells Jody to hop in his car and with that description how could he not. I also like Kristin Hunter Lattany’s writing style. She doesn’t use words that are too complicated but yet gives great descriptions and keeps you hooked on the story with good use of figurative language. She also gives us a good idea of how Junior is respected in Jody’s household by telling us how Jody’s father left home before he was born. This shows that Junior is really the man of the house because all they have is their mom .In conclusion Kristin Hunter Lattany did a great job at creating a good piece of literature, used very good figurative language gave the story suspense, and didn’t make it too difficult to read. She enabled me to really get into the story and allowed me to picture the conflict and characters.
The author did a very good job of creating a good piece of literature. In the story “heroes Return.” First, the story was well written. Kristin Lattany started the story off with excitement and it drew me in to read on. When the narrator says “ I tell you, I am about to explode. My brother Junior was coming home.” To me that shows excitement because when my brother comes home from college I get excited to and cant wait to see him. Once I read on the author reveal more and more about the lifestyle of the narrator and his family. Finally, I really enjoyed the way Lattany writes she uses language that is easy to understand she also uses figurative language like when the narrator says “ I had a feeling in my stomach, like when I eat some corn chips and grape soda then mom puts a big plate of food out and I cant eat it.” That made me realize what he was feeling at the time. The author also helped me draw many pictures like when King pulls up in his half block long Cadillac and has a good looking girl in the passenger seat. Lattany really paints a picture of what king looks like and the type of figure he is. Overall Lattany wrote a great piece if literature which help me picture and wonder what was going to happen in the story.
In the short story “Hero’s Return,” the author created a good piece of literature. They used a little bit of almost every type of good literature. The first type they used was suspense. They used suspense when they were talking about how Jr. took off his belt and told Jody to go flush the drugs. It says this on pages. 16 and 17, “I pulled the plastic bag out of my pocket. It’s-. I know what is Jr. said and took off his belt. Go flush it down the toilet.” This is great suspense plus foreshadowing. It is making you wonder what is going to happen next but also gives you the hint that he is going to whip his brother with the belt. The author also uses figurative language very well. They help you imagine and visualize what the situation Jody was in was like. Like on page 11, “It was hot enough to boil water on the sidewalk that morning, and my foot was blistered from the whole in my sneaks.” This helps you visualize because of their great description. The author also had believable and relatable characters. Some people could relate to Jody because their older siblings try to show them how to behave. Like when Jr. shows Jody what jail was like because she was going to sell the drugs and that was a bad thing. The author also showed an interesting or relatable conflict. Some people could relate to the conflict because they are dealing with drugs and their older siblings find out and try to steer them in the right direction. Just like Jr. and Jody. The last reason why this was a good piece of literature was because it had a good moral. The moral was if you do bad or illegal things then there will be consequences and the consequences are not good at all. This is how the author created a good piece of literature.
The story "Heroes Return is an effective piece of literature. I think this because the author keep you wondering whats going to happen next. Also the author uses foreshadowing. In the beginning the main character Jody is very proud of his brother being sent off to jail. The author describes this well. The author uses foreshadowing when Junior gets back from jail and takes down the sigh that his mom put up for him and doesn't think he is cool because he went to jail. This shows that Junior has changed from the experience. There is a bit of suspense in the story when Jody gets the King's car because you don't know whats going on. The author uses some figurative language. An example is when King says " I want you to be my right hand man". This could mean many things like his best friend, or someone he works with, you don't really suspect that is is going to be selling drugs. All in all i believe the author was successful in making an effective piece of literature.
In the story “Hero’s Return” the author, Kristin Lattany is successful in creating a good piece of literature. An example of good literacy that this short story has is it teaches a good lesson. This lesson is Junior teaching his younger brother, Jody, what right and what’s wrong after Junior was let out of jail. Like Junior, Jody was headed toward the path of being a criminal. Junior realized that he did not want his brother to end up in jail like him. Junior taught this lesson to Jody by, “He gave me a whack with the back of his hand.” Also Junior said, “So you want to go to jail, huh? All right, I’ll show you what jail is like,” on page 36. When Junior was in jail he had to sleep on uncomfortable spring mattress, he only got to eat bread and water and he got beat up a lot. In order to steer his brother in the right direction he treated Jody like he was in jail. His method work and turned Jody away from the criminal life. The lesson of the story is don’t make a bad decision because you could end up in trouble.
Another reason this story is a good piece of literature is because it is suspenseful. For example it says, “I trembled, cause I knew what was coming. He had the belt in his hand, folded over double.” This builds suspense because the character and you know what’s about to happen and you what to know if they’ll end up okay. Also to build suspense the author writes,”…is pass this stuff out among kids…When they want more, you come back to me. I’ll tell you what to charge ‘em,” says the King. This is suspenseful because you want to find out whether or not Jody will sell the drugs or not. In conclusion the author Kristin Lattany was successful in making a good piece of literature.
This story was an effective piece of literature because it was very descriptive. I was able to visualize many of the scenes. The author told about problems that are happening at this time. The story addressed how it is to be in prison. This was done to help keep young teenagers from making a major mistake and landing in prison. It also brought out the problem of the rights of released prisoners being put back in to society. It discussed people being permanently labeled as a trouble maker. Little chance of employment for these prisoners, most doors of opportunity shut tight.
The story plot was a good lesson. Junior realized the marks against him and knew he could not add to it. The story showed me he had to make important choices and when he did it would affect his life forever. The reader is left with a strong moral issue that all of us have to address. The subject of the story is a good one. Now more than ever before have there been so many people jailed at one time.
In this story the author was very successful in creating a good piece of literature. Some literature this story has is foreshadowing. The story foreshadows that King would want them to sell drugs to other people. Jody and the other boys go to the corner knowing this too. This story is also good literature because it has some truth in it. The 70s were really like that. The proof is that the people there were really poor and the prices for everything were really low. At that time they were also selling drugs bu tit wasn’t as bad as it is now.
Kristin Lattany, the author of "Heroes Return", did an outstanding job at creating a good piece of literature. First, this story was very descriptive. For example in the story, it says, " the cadillac was about a half block long and a sharp fox in a blone wig was sitting beside King. He looked cool as an ice cube with shiny diamonds.(pg.36). The author did an excellent job describing the scene and King. I can imagine how cool King is looking and also how rich he is. You can also see that he has very shiny diamonds and that gives it away that he is pretty rich. Another descriptive part was " It was hot enough to boil water on the sidewalk. This was easy to imagine because I can imagine that the sidewalk is burning hot and the author gave a very good description. I can also tell it's probably summer and I can relate to that becuase I know how it feels when it's summer and hot. Another thing the author did very well with was the suspense. One example is, when Junior locks up the door, everyone is wondering what he will do to Jody and it turns out to be giving Jody a lesson by whipping him. He wanted to teach him a good lesson and makes sure that he won't go on the path which he had went on. Also, he kept on asking, do you want to jail, well i'll show you what jail is like. Another example of suspense is, when King and jody are riding in King's car He asked Jody do you want to sell drugs for me and said do you want to be my right hand man. Another great example is when King is done talking to Jody, and then he gets out the car, and Junior sees him, everyone is wondering what Junior's reaction will be. These two things kept me very into the story and want to keep reading on. So basically, the author, Kristin Lattany, did a very good job at creating a good piece of literature.
