Book 1-4 Purpose

What is the purpose for Books 1-4 in the Odyssey? What information from the story allows you to determine this purpose (this means use direct evidence to prove ideas)?

  • Please use specific ideas from the story and direct passages to prove your ideas. Also, consider the class discussions that we had.

The purpose for chapters 1-4 is to show you what the kingdom is like without the master, Oddyseus. He has gone to Trojan war and it's been 10 years and there's no one to protect his family and kingdom. Also, the first four chapters show how Telemachus becomes a man and the duties are now on his shoulders. For example, one proof of evidence that Telemachus grows up, is when he tells his mom, " Go then within the house and busy yourself with your duties for it is I who am master here. This shows he's taking in charge and telling his own mom what to do. One example of him being is that he tells all 103 suitors,
"Shamless and insolent suitors". The first four chapters inform how it's like without the boss of the house, Oddyseus. It says that 103 suitors were eating up their house. This shows that without Oddyseus, the kingdom is nothing and completely unguarded. Without Oddyseus, the kingdom isn't really under anyone's control. It's Oddyseus who keeps it protected and under control. Since he isn't here, anyone can take it over like the 103 suitros but Telemachus doesn't let them becuase he decides to become a man and step up. So in my opinion, that's what the first four chapters are about.

Also, the first four chapters just really says that everyone, especially the suitors are trying to take over his kingdom and completely taking advantage of Oddyseus not being there.

The purpose of books 1-4 in the odyssey is to introduce the characters. Also to just get little back ground on the story and like when and where it takes place and the main conflict is introduced. This is proven because it doesn’t go into much detail. It just says like this is the god Poseidon, he is the god of the sea. It says about the conflict to like all of the suitors at Telemachus’s house. That is the main conflict and he needs to find his father and be more like him and complete his journey.

The purpose of books 1-4 in the Odyssey is to inform or show us that Telemachus has finally became a man, became stronger and older and finally gotten out of his house to go find Odysseus, his father. "I am also stronger, and whether here among this people, or by going to Pylos, I will do you all the harm I can." These things shows that he is becoming a man. In the books, Menelaus, the king of Sparta, commented on how Telemachus looks like his father, "'My dear wife," replied Menelaus, "I see the likeness just as you do. His hands and feet are just like Odysseus."' This comment shows that Telemachus became a man because he looks like his father in almost every way, and that only when you are old, you will look like your father.

In the first few chapters of the book “The Odyssey”, I discovered that it’s based on Telemachus. It’s about him standing up to the suitors, becoming a man, and his journey to find his father. A quote that shows this is, “Mother’, answered Telemachus,…Go, then within the house and busy yourselves with your daily duties, your loom, your distaff, and the ordering of you servants; for speech is man’s matter and mine above all others- for it is I who am master here.” In this quote Telemachus is explaining to his mom that he is master now and he calls what to do. Back in their time that was a man’s job.

The purpose of books one through four in the Odyssey was to explain why Telemachus has to go on this journey. Telemachus wants the suitors out of his house so they do not take any more of his food and space. To do this Telemachus needs to find his father, so he has to go on a journey to find his dad. At the beginning of this journey Telemachus starts to grow up and show how he is like his father. When people see Telemachus they think of his father, Odysseus, who is a respectful man. This is why people like Telemachus. These ideas all interweave into each other, thus explaining why this journey begins in the first place.

The purpose of books 1-4 in the Odyssey was to give a basic outline of the story. There are many details explaining how the first 4 books outline this story. One of the details that outlined the story was that Odysseus was trapped in a huge cave where Calypso wanted to marry him. Poseidon is keeping him trapped on this island, still holding a grudge because Odysseus blinded Poseidon’s Cyclops son. All of the gods had decided that it was time that Odysseus had returned home. The gods had a meeting in which they had devised a plan to take Odysseus off the island. On page 4 Athene said, “… it is for Odysseus that my heart bleeds, when I think of his sufferings in that lonely sea-grit island, far away, poor man, from all his friends.” Another example of how the first 4 books were a basic outline of this story is how Telemachus, son of Odysseus helped his mother with her suitors. Telemachus told his mother to not worry about the suitors. He said,” Go, then. Within the house and busy yourselves with your daily duties… for it is I who is master here” (11). He then proceeded to threaten the suitors that he would have no more of them in his house and that it would not be wise to return. He said, “ … but in the morning meet me in full assembly that I may give you formal notice to depart, and feast at one another’s houses, turn and turn about, at your own cost”(12).

The purpose for chapters 1-4 is to establish the background of the story. It introduces some of the characters, as well as gives you the main conflict. It also gives you the time and place of where the story is going to take place, ten years after the Trojan war. In the story so far, Odyssus has gone away to fight the Trojan war, leaving behind his child Telemachus, and his wife Penelope. But now that the war is over and the godess Calypso is keeping him on an island with her because she is in love with him. Meanwhile, suitors want to marry Penelope while Odyssus is away in Troy. So in conclusion the first four chapters have established the basic outline for the story to come.

The purpose of the chapters 1-4 was to show that Telemachus was starting to become man. For example, he started to turn out like his dad. "His hands and feet are just like Odysseus'; so his hair with the shape of his and the expression of his eyes." Telemachus talks just like his dad also. Another example that shows that Telemachus was becoming a man was when he said "I will be chief in my own house and will rule those whom Odysseus has won for me. Those are some examples of how chapters 1-4 shows that Telemachus was starting to become a man

The purpose of books I-IV are to tell about how Telemacaus has grown into a man. He is described to be more like Odysseus when he decided to make up his mind to take the throne instead of waiting for his father. one example would be that he tells the 103 suitors that they are insolent and shameless to their faces. Also, when he goes up to the throne at the assembly even the oldest of the assembly members move aside for him.
